Rhinoplasty FAQ’s

Can I see what my new nose will look like?

Dr Chan has a computer imaging program where he can change the nose on the computer and put it side by side with the ‘before’ photographs.  He will help you understand the imbalances in your nose and guide you as to what changes will probably suit your face.  If you like what you see then you will probably be happy with the operation and can proceed with confidence.

How successful is the operation?

Almost all patients are happy with the results.  This is due to the computer imaging (above) where patients can preview what changes appeal to them.

How much pain will I have?

Very little pain.  You will be unable to breathe through your nose due to swelling in your internal passages for 1 week.  You will complain more about a dry mouth than the pain.

How long will I have to be off work?

A splint is put on the nose to protect it and this is removed after 1 week.  Swelling and bruising is variable and is usually worse in the first week.  Patients can return to work after approximately 10 to 14 days.

I have difficulty in breathing.  Can this be corrected at the same time as the nose reshaping?

If you have a deviated nasal septum Dr Chan can organise an ENT surgeon who specializes in the nasal passages to work in with him.  In this way you can have your breathing problems corrected and your nose reshaped with one anaesthetic and one hospital stay.

How long will I be in hospital?

One night. You may go home the following day.

How long does the operation take?

Depending on the complexity the operation takes between 1 and 2 hours.

Will I see any scars on my nose?

Usually the operation is performed through the nostrils without visible scars.  In more complex cases there will be a tiny scar in between the nostrils which fades well with time and is not noticeable.  This is called an open rhinoplasty.
